Speaking is recognized as one of the productive skills in English language learning and holds a vital role in communication. At the tertiary level, particularly within the English Language Education Study Program, speaking is taught as an independent subject distinct from the integrated approach typically employed in earlier stages of education. This transition, especially for first-year students who have recently progressed from high school to university, demands significant adjustment in both learning strategies and expectations. To address this challenge, the lecturer has designed and developed this textbook specifically to cater to students’ needs in acquiring and improving speaking skills. The textbook offers a comprehensive range of more than 14 engaging topics, distributed across meetings 1–7 and 9–15. These topics are supported by diverse indoor and outdoor learning activities grounded in a project-based learning approach. This pedagogical framework fosters not only speaking proficiency but also collaboration, creativity, and learner autonomy.
Voices Beyond the Classroom is an innovative English language learning textbook designed to take communication skills far beyond traditional academic boundaries. Through a blend of multimedia resources, interactive activities, and collaborative projects, this book empowers students to find and refine their voice in diverse real-world contexts. This textbook integrates various innovative learning strategies: students engage with curated YouTube video materials, participate in peer and group collaborations to complete projects, explore diverse speaking topics, and practice using methods such as the TED Talk Sample Model and the Four Corners Modification Strategy. These strategies are intentionally incorporated to stimulate students’ engagement and enhance their communicative competence in English. The primary aim of this textbook is to serve as a valuable teaching and learning resource. Each chapter combines clear instruction, hands-on practice, and reflection tasks to strengthen both fluency and confidence. With its emphasis on learning by doing, Voices Beyond the Classroom transforms the English learning experience into a dynamic journey equipping students not just to speak, but to connect, inspire, and lead in any setting.
